Technology Predictions 2009

Filed under: BroadDev, Comedy, Infrastructure 2.0, Networking — Tags: , , , , , , , , — John Casaretto @ 7:14 pm

Efraim Schwartz over at ComputerWorld reported back in July the results of various studies that indicate that IT jobs will drop in 2009.  Contractors, projects, overall spending down.  The news is dire: “Almost no investment in cloud computing”.

Well, I don’t have any studies to refer to just gut predictions.
Like that old sly cop with the corduroy jacket on your favorite TV show, I got some hunches.

Shining up my crystal ball:

http://www.wearebsm.com/managed_objects/crystal_ball2_bmwPreview.jpg

YES…….
Economy is kinda clouding things up, but yes, a few things seem clear..

  1. Yahoo – Microsoft will scoop them up
  2. Windows 7 – Unfortunately for Microsoft, this will probably dud, too many factors against it.
  3. Ipod Touch Tablet – An internet-capable touch screen tablet –March or June
  4. Chrome 2 – will run on cell platform and desktop, instant browser sync
  5. Digg – Google property
  6. Giants win the Super Bowl – not a tech prediction-that just popped in there.

Again, 1-5 are based on nothing but hunches here people.  #6 is something else entirely.  (We make no claims to the validity of any of these predictions, however)

Side note – Gizmodo posted this rumor about Steve Jobs on their website.  Nothing that wasn’t said before, but there are alleged reliable sources here.  Jobs is the Walt Disney of Computing™, let’s hope this rumor is not true.  Long live Jobs and I will take one of those Touch Tablets please…

Have a good 2009..

Cisco’s Branded Entertainment - Review - Not Funny But Clever - It Has Potential - Solid B

Filed under: BroadDev, Comedy, Networking — Tags: , , — John Furrier @ 4:44 pm

Cisco just launched a branded entertainment social media microsite called Tech Edge Weekly showing a blogger (Tim Washer) named Ira Pumfkin who is in search of the big scoop.  He is the prototypical blogger (in Cisco’s eyes).  Cisco makes fun of the bloggers in this video with goofball Ira Pumfkin acting like a alpha-blogger trying to break a story.

The videos (embedded below) are on the conservative side and the joke on the bloggers could backfire in the blogosphere (that might be their intention). However, I loved the clever humor, but it lacked laughs.

The video series brings out the rock stars John Chambers and other management.  I liked the people side of that approach.  I can see how Cisco doesn’t want to push the envelope because of corporate legal issue.

I would have given it an A if it was funny.  It didn’t make me laugh.

I give it a solid B for the star power in getting the execs involved. Making this people centric will make it a winner but Cisco needs to add more to the writing for better quality.

What’s your opinion?

Here are the two videos

Microsoft Seinfeld ads are over?

Filed under: BroadDev, Comedy, Web 2.0 — Tags: , — John Casaretto @ 10:31 am

Gizmodo has some background on this story Was it cancelled?  Was this planned?  Will Seinfeld come back?  Oh the cliffhanger is killing me!

Which brings us back to Alex’s point people are talking about it, so its a positive.  Personally I think they’ll bring Jerry back at some point and that this is some deliberate campaign strategy.   Think of the many companies that run simultaneous ad campaigns.  Like Geico comes to mind, with their lizard guy and the cavemen is ongoing.  What do cavemen have to do with insurance?  Nothing really, but people get familiar with the name and get that positive association.  I think it’s a great move to humanize the giant and create that folksy component of Americana effect.

Comcast Just Opened the Door to P2P Business Model - HD is the End Game

Filed under: Comedy — Tags: , , , — John Furrier @ 5:03 pm

Comcast putting a limit on usage 250GB just opened the door on the P2P business model. GigaOm (Om) who is an authority on this subject weights in. Om nails it by saying that in the short term it might not look good but it certainly raises question about what the future might look like. I agree with Om on this. Caps are bad and possibly foreclose the future innovation. Wait it’s a free market. The answer is P2P.

P2P is not hip today but this move by Comcast opens the door for the p2p business model. Why? The innovation in acceleration and performance has to come from new innovation in the transport. Comcast can’t deny p2p after this move. They have to let it “play” (pun intended). P2P is the only way the guys like Comcast can increase user experience while offering faster performance for both Live and On-Demand programming.

It’s also a red herring to allow Comcast (in the short term) to own HD quality programming. Here Comcast doesn’t care about the net and wants the HD side of it (see NBC playbook from the Olypics - HD trumps everything).

HD is the end game and the question is will Comcast keep the broadcast franchise or will the net technologies get there fast?

From Om Malik at GigaOm: He writes…

Comcast is out defending its bandwidth caps and how they are not bad. And how 250 GB transfer is plenty and enough to do whatever we want to do. Of course, in today’s terms that is more than enough, but what happens in the future? Nevertheless, if they are going to put caps, then they need to give us what I think is an acceptable expectation: a meter.

Metered billing needs a meter we can see, use and monitor any time we desire to do so. Water and electric utilities provide that meter (regardless of whether we use it or not), so why not Comcast?

If a customer surpasses 250 GB and is one of the top users of the service for a second time within a six-month timeframe, his or her service will be subject to termination for one year. After the one year period expires, the customer may resume service by subscribing to a service plan appropriate to his or her needs.

Figure out a way to tell us what our monthly usage is, and let us know if we are running up against a 250 GB cap, so that we know when to stop and not pay overage. I want to know at every single minute how much bandwidth I have used.

After all, if someone crosses the 250 GB twice in six months, they are going to get tossed out. The burden of proof lies with Comcast to prove, measure and meter to the most accurate byte of data transferred.

Another Question For Comcast: If you’re going to meter, then please let us know how you are factoring in the overhead associated with TCP/IP. Will this be included or excluded in the cap? After all, overhead includes control messages (session control, packet headers) and this can be as high as 40 percent.

This is where FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has to step up and do something. If he is going to allow Comcast to put caps in place, then the FCC needs a firm bond from Comcast saying that they wouldn’t lower the caps to, say, 150 GB or 100 GB using the same lame excuse of 1 percent people degrading the network.

You want to know why I think they are going to obfuscate the issue and fudge the numbers sooner or later using some Enron math? Just go to the FAQ page that explains their 250 GB cap decision. You will consume 250 GB in a month if you do any of the following:

* Sending 20,000 high-resolution photos,
* Sending 40 million emails;
* Downloading 50,000 songs; or
* Viewing 8,000 movie trailers.

…but then lower down on the same page, they say:

* Send 50 million emails (at 0.05 KB/email)
* Download 62,500 4 MB songs (at 4 MB/song)
* Download 125 standard-definition movies (at 2 GB/movie)
* Upload 25,000 hi-resolution digital photos (at 10 MB/photo)

What is it with you guys? Can’t do the math? Forget that…how about answering a simple question: How many HD movies can you download with 250 GB cap? That’s the only answer I need.

Filed under: Comedy — Tags: , , — John Furrier @ 10:11 am

WARNING: Comedy IT Video - Language Not Suitable for Children

I ran into this funny video yesterday. It’s written by Josh Weinberg and his friends. It’s called “Web Site is Down” - a satire on IT tech support between a web guy and sales guy.

If you’ve worked in a datacenter or IT infrastructure support you can appreciate the humor with Josh’s video.
