Online Video and ISPs - Is P2P Viable - Online Video Business Model Needs P2P

Filed under: BroadDev — John Furrier @ 11:26 am

Streaming Media West panel discussion on ISP verses online video. I represented the P2P perspective on the panel. Enjoy the video where Verizon, ATT, and Level 3 joined me to discuss this hot topic. Of which the Comcast cap was a big news item that was addressed.

The video of the entire panel is below.

Betsy Schiffman from Wired had a story on the panel which had Verizon and ATT endorsing P2P and a summary of the show. AT&T and Verizon execs expect file-sharing applications will become widely-used tools, mostly because they’re efficient and inexpensive distribution platforms. Video sites are ready to make money. That’s the recurring theme at Streaming Media West, an online video conference in San Jose, Calif.

While ABC, NBC and Fox have all embraced the internet with an almost freakish enthusiasm, the online video ad market is puny compared to television, and frustration with the monetization problem is palpable.

Some quotes

“I’m very interested in [P2P],” said Doug Pask, a senior technologist at Verizon, while speaking at a panel at Streaming Media West. “It’s not a silver bullet, but it works well in high-volume environments and it has its place in the consumer world. A number of studies show that people don’t use [file-sharing applications] because they want to steal content — it’s about getting what they want when they want it.”

“We all know video is here. But I don’t think monetization is growing fast enough. I think future innovations will be about helping content providers reduce the costs,” says John Furrier
