Chrome Dulls Outlook Web Access
Just a short note on Google Chrome. I downloaded it today to try it out. I had not idea how hard that would be. The download was easy but it doesn’t seem to work with a lot of webpages. Most importantly for me if you try to visit Outlook Web Access the Exchange 2007 CAS server will force you into downlevel “OWA Light”. Any browser I use absolutely must support the full functionality of OWA. Maybe I shouldn’t have had such high expectations from a beta product but I expected more from Google given all the hype.
My opinion is Chrome will have a somewhat limited use scenario once the novelty wears off. There’s a lot of potential with google app integration, but the web is full of unrealized potential (see Google, youTube, monetization).

Well, that’s due to Microsoft, not Chrome - they do not support Chrome and switch to the light version for browsers the don’t know, that’s why.

Hmmm, it’s somehow Microsoft’s fault for “not supporting” a browser that didn’t exist until over a year after they launched Exchange 2007. I’m not sure how you can plan for something that doesn’t exist. Google could have added the hooks to support OWA but chose not to. To me, and the other millions that use Exchange, that makes it a second tier browser.

Ummmm, actually if Microsoft supported open web standards then it wouldn’t matter when the browser was created, it would work. Alas, Microsoft forces you to use their browser, so yes, it is Microsoft’s fault!!!

I think this text from the forms login for OWA says it all
“The Light client provides fewer features and is sometimes faster. Use the Light client if you are on a slow connection or using a computer with unusually strict browser security settings. If you are using a browser other than Internet Explorer 6.0 or later, you can only use the Light client”
